Four Food Groups
In order to understand the balanced diet components of a healthy diet you need to know what food groups are essential to have. Eating groups of these foods at every meal can help you lead a healthy life.
Vegetables and Fruits
This group consists of salads, raw and cooked vegetables, raw and cooked fruits and fruit or vegetable juices. Vegetables and fruits supply many of your body's needed vitamins and minerals. Eat at least four servings per day.
Examples of one serving are:
- a raw vegetable or fruit (apple, banana, carrot, pepper etc.).
- a half cup of steamed or cooked vegetables or fruits.
- a small glass of juice (preferably non-sweetened).
Bread and Cereal Group
This basic food group contains cereals, grains, and breads. This group contains a variety minerals and vitamins, and this group can even contain minor amounts of protein.
Eat at least four servings per day.
Examples of one serving are:
- 5 crackers.
- a small bowl of cereal.
- one pancake, waffle or tortilla wrap.
- one half cup of pasta or rice. A typical plate of pasta might be two+ servings.
- one cookie.
- a slice of bread.
Protein Foods
The protein food group consists of poultry, meat, fish, and eggs are in this group. This group gives you most of your daily protein but it also contains a few a vitamins and minerals.Eat at least three servings per day.
Examples of one serving are:
- two ounces (~75 grams) of meat, fish, chicken, turkey, ostrich or duck.
- two handfuls of nuts (preferably unsalted)
- one cup of cooked peas or beans.
- two medium eggs.
- a generous portion of peanut butter on slice of toast bread.
Dairy Foods
This basic food group contains cheese, Milk, yogurt and quark. This group has high amounts of calcium, which is important for bones and it also gives you protein and vitamins.Eat at least two servings per day.
Examples of one serving are:
- 1 cup glass of milk.
- two cheese slices.
- 3/4 of a cup of yogurt.
- 1 cup of soy beverage.
